To mark the 20th anniversary of the Europe Cross, we invite you to a special day on Friday, 10 July, 2026, at the Alberfeldkogel. Join us as we celebrate this occasion at a place that has stood for connection for two decades and offers breathtaking views over Lake Traunsee.

The day begins with a joint anniversary hike from the mountain station to the Europe Cross. This is followed by a ceremonial mountain mass and a festive event with welcome remarks by Rupert Schiefer and a speech by Markus Achleitner.

  • 10:35 am: Start of the hike from the mountain station*

  • 11:30 am: Mountain mass at the Europe Cross

  • 11:45 am: Welcome remarks by Rupert Schiefer (Managing Director, OÖ Seilbahnholding GmbH) and speech by Regional Councillor for Economic Affairs and Europe Markus Achleitner

  • 1:30 pm: Back at the mountain station

Tip: Please wear sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing.

*After taking the Feuerkogel cable car, an easy hike (approx. 1 hour walking time) leads from the plateau to the Europe Cross.

The Europe Cross

The Europe Cross stands on Alberfeldkogel (approx. 1,707 m) in the Höllengebirge mountains and was erected in 2006 during Austria’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The approximately 5-metre-high cross is made up of equally sized cubes, each representing an EU member state.

Inside each cube is a stone from the respective country – a symbol of Europe’s diversity and unity. This unique structure was created by more than 100 students from the HTL Wels in collaboration with regional partners.

In May 2025, the Europe Cross was ceremoniously expanded. To mark 30 years of Austria’s EU membership, additional stones from Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia were added. As a result, all current EU member states are now represented in the Europe Cross.

Milestones of the Europe Cross

  • 2006: Construction of the Europe Cross by students of HTL Wels during Austria’s EU Council Presidency

  • June 23, 2006: Official inauguration of the Europe Cross at Alberfeldkogel

  • 2007: Installation of lighting for the cross

  • 2025: Expansion with stones from Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia – now representing all EU member states

Up to Alberfeldkogel

From the Feuerkogel plateau, a varied hike of around one hour leads to Alberfeldkogel (1,707 m), featuring the Europe Cross and a scenic viewing platform at the summit.

The trail winds through the alpine landscape of the Höllengebirge mountains and offers impressive views of Lake Traunsee and Lake Langbathsee.
